Mr. Thomason entered Government service as an intelligence analyst assigned to the U.S. Army Intelligence Agency. In that role, he performed technical assessments of adversary systems and supported development and fielding of highly classified assets used in joint testing and analysis. He performed related roles during assignments with the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command, and the Missile and Space Intelligence Command. After reorganization of the intelligence community in 1992, he was reassigned to the Project Manager, Instrumentation, Targets, Threat Systems and SOF Training Systems (PM ITTS). PMITTS is the Army’s threat systems acquisition supporting testing and evaluation and, in this new position, he obtained additional acquisition credentials.

Mr. Thomason’s background is thus unusual within the personnel management system. He is certified in both the intelligence and the acquisition career fields.

Mr. Thomason has served as program director for a number of acquisition programs producing intelligence products. In 2003, he was selected to serve as the Opposing Force Technology Manager for Joint National Training Capability at the United States Joint Forces Command in Suffolk, Virginia. In 2004, he was designated by the Deputy Secretary of Defense to serve as the Program Manager for the Joint Information Operations Range, the Department’s initial Cyber Range. In 2005, he was designated to serve as Director of the Joint Information Operations Joint Management Office by the Deputy Secretary of Defense. As Director, he was responsible for oversight of numerous Department of Defense (DoD)–wide Information Operations and cyber related programs. In 2012, he was assigned as the Technical Director of Cyber Operations for the Threat Systems Management Office. As Technical Director, he was responsible for one of the nine certified and accredited Department of Defense Red Teams and has overseen over 400 cyber assessment across DoD, Services, and Combatant Commands. In 2019, he became the Director for the Threat Systems Management Office.

Mr. Thomason has extensive background in threat intelligence, range operations, IO and cyber to including participation in Quadrennial Defense Review and leading the Department’s 2010 efficiency review for strategic communications.

Mr. Thomason earned a Bachelors Degree in Engineering from both Auburn University and the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He is a graduate of the Defense Systems Management College.

Mr. Thomason has been married to his wife, Terri for thirty years. They have two children, Toni and John.
